Restore Weathered Teak

Gray teak is not damaged teak. Bare teak turns silver in about 9 to 12 months outdoors, and Anderson Teak says its strength stays the same. To bring the gold back: a teak cleaner, a rinse, light hand sanding with the grain if it feels rough, then a sealer.

Why teak turns gray

Sun and rain weather the surface of bare teak to silver. Only the outer layer changes color, which is why a cleaner and light sanding bring the honey tone back. Left dirty for long, the silver can turn dark gray or greenish, Anderson notes.

Keep the silver patina

Gray or gold, the steps are the same on teak benches, teak coffee tables, teak bar sets and teak shower benches.

Wash
Mild detergent and water 2 to 3 times a year, per Anderson, with a soft brush; no pressure washer
Black dots
Mildew growing on dirt, not on the teak, per Kingsley Bate; wash it off and let the wood dry
Finish
None needed: Country Casual says teak needs no preservative or finish

How to restore weathered teak

  1. Clean. Use a teak cleaner for gray or black teak. The Star brite one step cleaner goes on dry wood: spread it with a stiff brush, wait 2 to 3 minutes, scrub with the grain.
  2. Rinse. Rinse well on a soft spray and let the wood dry fully.
  3. Sand if rough. By hand, with the grain: 220 grit per Country Casual, 320 per Kingsley Bate. No power sander.
  4. Seal. One even coat of teak sealer on the clean, dry wood. See teak oil vs sealer.

Wear gloves and eye protection. The safety sheet for the Star brite cleaner lists oxalic acid and glycolic acid, 5 to 10 percent each, and warns of serious eye damage.

Sanding and brightening teak

Sanding is for rough grain, scratches and stains, not for every refresh. Kingsley Bate hand sands with 320 grit along the grain and never with a power sander. A two part cleaner, cleaner then brightener, takes weathered teak back to a light blond, per Country Casual. Before any stain, Anderson says gray teak must be sanded, and stain is hard to undo.

Short answers

Weathered teak questions

The long ones go to help@teakpatiostore.com.

How do you make teak look new again

Clean it with a teak cleaner, rinse, let it dry, hand sand any rough grain with the grain, then seal it. A sealer keeps the honey color for up to a year, per Anderson.

How long does it take for teak to turn gray

About 9 to 12 months outdoors by Kingsley Bate, 1 to 2 years by Country Casual, depending on sun and rain. Teak kept under cover or indoors does not gray, Country Casual says.

Does teak get darker with age

Outdoors it goes lighter, to silver gray. Left dirty, Anderson notes the silver can darken to gray and greenish; a clean brings it back.

Can you pressure wash teak

Better not. Country Casual and Kingsley Bate advise against it, and Barlow Tyrie excludes pressure washer damage from its warranty. Use a soft brush and a hose on a soft spray.
