Is Teak Furniture Worth It

Teak costs more up front: our solid teak dining sets run $1,300 to $8,800, about $475 to $1,100 a seat. In return the wood needs no finish and stays outside all year. No maker publishes a lifespan in years, and the USDA says precise ones are not possible.

How long teak lasts

Nobody publishes a number of years. The USDA Wood Handbook rates old growth teak heartwood very resistant to decay and young growth teak moderately resistant, warns ratings can be lower in warm, humid climates and says precise service lives are not possible. Plantation teak gains heartwood with age: in one Brazilian study the share rose from 16 percent at 5 years to 60 percent at 20, and decay resistance with it.

Price it by piece too: teak chaise lounges, teak outdoor sofas and teak garden benches run from $650.

What decides how long a teak piece lasts

Heartwood rather than sapwood, which has low decay resistance in every species; kiln drying, 8 to 12 percent at Anderson; joints cut into each other; and care. The written promise is the frame warranty: 2 years at Anderson, up to 10 years or a limited lifetime at other brands. See teak brands compared.

Can you still buy old growth teak

Hardly. Myanmar banned log exports in April 2014 and allowed plantation logs again in May 2019, and the US Treasury sanctioned its state timber exporter, Myanma Timber Enterprise, on April 21, 2021. All seven brands we compared say their teak is plantation grown in Indonesia.

Walnut vs teak: the USDA rates black walnut heartwood resistant, a step below old growth teak, and walnut shrinks almost twice as much. Ipe is rated very resistant like old growth teak, more than three times as hard and much heavier, 65.5 against 40.9 lb per cubic foot. More in Teak vs acacia vs eucalyptus.

Short answers

Is teak worth it: questions

The long ones go to help@teakpatiostore.com.

Is teak furniture worth the money

If it will live uncovered outdoors for years, teak is the wood rated for it: no finish needed, out all year. If it sits on a covered porch for a few seasons, a less costly wood with a yearly finish can do.

Why is teak furniture so expensive

Durable teak is heartwood, and plantation trees carry more of it the older they get. Add kiln drying, cut joints and freight on a set that can weigh 200 to 400 lb.

What are the downsides of teak furniture

The price, the weight, the gray color unless you seal it yearly, oil bleeding from new wood in the first rains and small end grain checks that warranties do not cover.

Can termites get into teak wood

The Wood Database rates teak heartwood resistant to termites but only moderately resistant to powder post beetles. Sapwood of any species, teak included, has low decay resistance, per the USDA.
